MOCAF (Monitoreo de Caminos Forestales / Monitoring Forest Roads) was developed by Conservación Amazónica (ACCA), the Spatial Analysis Team for the Amazon Borders (Equipo de Análisis Espacial de las Fronteras Amazónicas - ABSAT), University of Richmond and the Universidad Federal de Acre (Federal University of Acre - UFAC), in the framework of SERVIR-Amazonia.
Forest roads and other types of land trails are important infrastructure for the life of communities and populations in the Amazon, used for access, connection, transportation, and efficient circulation of goods and services. However, roads in the Amazon favor the expansion of deforestation and forest degradation, while threatening the region's diverse cultures and ecosystems. Road construction initiatives often do not take into account the socio-environmental consequences. Amazonian roads often expand without government, municipal, state, or federal monitoring or funding, without consulting traditional populations (indigenous, rubber tappers, quilombos, among others) and/or environmental impact analysis.
