In-land Satellite-based Water-Quality Indicators Monitoring Tool (iSWIM)

The iSWIM tool displays satellite derived water quality indicators processed from various satellite sensors, among them the MODIS-Aqua, Landsat and Sentinel. To facilitate efficient use of computing resources and minimize the burden of partners and users having to download the data to their computers for processing, SERVIR adopted a cloud computing technology via the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, which ensures that the data are processed on the cloud, and the user only visualizes the products. The user is not required to store the raw satellite images. The iSWIM tool also enables a user to visualize land use land cover change maps for a catchment that serves a certain lake, e.g. Lake Victoria. Land use changes are a key drive of water quality degradation in lakes. The tool also provides data which maybe be processed with specific algorithms that are suitable or tuned to conditions in inland water bodies. Algorithms used for global products are not always the best for retrieving products from small inland water bodies.
